Oh yeah? The NBA season goes on EVERY year?

By Chris Hamm

So I guess the basketball season has started. Someone did not inform me, again. The Mavs lost to the Grizzlies, and apparently Pau Gasol has a brother. 2009 is a crazy year already. Crazy for me because I thought about my lack of a fantasy basketball team for the first time today, more than a third of the way into the season. This is the process that some fantasy owners go through at some point in their lives, or at least I hope so. A person forgets the season has started because he or she forgot to sign up for a fantasy team. This is because that team you love to root for tanked last season, or has been losing its luster for the past several years.

For me, it is no secret that I’m a fan of the Mavericks, and as a result of their meandering, I have just lost some of the interest that I once had for the game of fantasy sports. I saw trades made in the NBA last season that made me think that there was one guy in a room that had two teams swapping spare parts for championship pieces; yet the guy didn’t have a clever team name like Wade’s Grape G2 or whatever.

The only aspects that I want fantasy and real sports to share is the names of players, and not collusion. I could not believe it at the time, but the NBA is where cheesy commercials happen, so I have lost all disbelief since then. (Climbs off soapbox) And yes, a commercial convinced me.

Even while writing this, I contemplated whether anyone would care because I barely care enough to write all this.

Unfortunately, professional and, subsequently, fantasy sports have lost some of their importance as the years have passed, but I hope that eventually the drive will return to once again deal with meaningless debates about who brings down a team more in a season of Roto.

Dwight Howard!!
