With the 30th pick of the 2nd round (59th overall), the Toronto Raptors are pleased to select...
2.30 Kirk Hinrich, PG
Captain Kirk has everything that the Toronto Raptors are looking for in a point guard to run the team for now (4 years pro) and the future (just turned 27). He is an excellent perimeter defender and can match up against the top point guards in the league 1-on-1, he can also defend multiple positions if called upon in a switch or rotation. He's a terrific rebounder at his position, has quick hands to get steals. Offensively he is able to run an efficient half-court offense, can shoot the three-pointer, penetrate and finish/dish.
Before this 07-08 season (which I believe to be an aberration), he had upped his numbers yearly in nearly every statistical category since joining the league, reaching career-high totals of 16.6pts / 6.3ast / 3.4reb / 1.2stl. He also shot 45% from the field (a frequent knock on hinrich is his shooting, though he shot nearly 49% for Kansas) and upped his free throw percentage to 84% (up to 89% this year).
He's been to the playoffs in 3 of his 4 years in the NBA where he has upped his scoring, assists and rebounds above career averages - with 22 games of playoff experience under his belt he should have enough experience to lead the Raptors to the ECF's for many years to come. He is the ideal point guard to pair with Dwight Howard for a deadly inside-outside game, and the Raptors now have an excellent perimeter defender to pair with Howard's inside shot-blocking presence.
