I think the rule would be best amended to read something like this going forward:
GMs can nominate up to 2 FAs at one time in one of two of the following combinations:
1. GMs can nominate 1 Bird FA, including his own, and 1 FA from the pool (unowned).
2. GMs can nominate 2 FAs from the pool (unowned).
No GM can have more than 1 of his Bird FAs listed at the same time, regardless of who nominated said player!
BUT, if a GM's Bird FA has been nominated by another manager, he can still be allowed to nominate 2 FAs, as long as the Bird FA (in option 1.) is one from another manager.
This, or something similarly worded to this, makes sense to me. It would allow me to nominate 2 FAs from the pool (moving the process along), while still protecting every manager's Bird FAs to a certain extent. This would give the manager the opportunity to either re-sign his own Bird guy while nominating another player from the pool, OR re-sign his Bird guy if another manager nominated him
, while still nominating 2 FAs as per the rule above (as long as he's not nominating a 2nd of his own Bird FAs).
Does that make sense? I'm really not trying to make the solution as difficult as the problem, but it's the best I can think up - plus, I feel it allows for everyone's concerns - keeps thing moving while still having some protections in place (as Fenris alluded to).
