Actually, when I go and look at it, I'm not sure that 'team direction' does exactly what I'd like it to. The points come from cat wins divided by salary, but what salary? In the offseason I may have had 2 or even 3 key players hit free agency, and since we don't have cap holds I'm guessing the system is supposed to be use the previous season's salary as well (otherwise it makes no sense at all).
I think 'team direction' really should be based on current team assets, not the previous season's assets. At that point people do have a legitimate point that the current system just gives double points for last season's success.
If free agents are supposed to be weighing the franchise's 'direction' they'd be looking at current assets IMO, not just the previous season. I think something like dividing the teams current total salary (expressed as, for example, 40.50M) by it's total BBM value might work. That way the score is always based on current assets and the number of assets doesn't matter (that's scored elsewhere anyway).
