Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like your saying that 4 year contracts are actually 3 years and the 4th year you have the player restricted.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th
ON ON TO RFA

Is this correct (for a 4 year signing)? In this case is the player on your team for the 4th year or do you need to resign him first.

If this is wrong, then i assume that if the 3rd year option TO is picked up then the 4th year becomes guaranteed as well and the 5th years starts the RFA?

same as in real nba. player can accept qualifying offer and play out 4th year or accept offer sheet with other team while leaving his team with the option to match it. i haven't worked out all the details of the rfa in our league yet though. for instance in real nba team can resign player when he becomes rfa, but we can't let team just resign a player without bidding, so some kind of bidding will have to be included in the process. also not any offer by other team should be considered worth taking by rfa, so that problem also needs to be resolved. i'll think about it a little and offer some solutions in next few days. if anybody has any ideas, as always, i'm ready to listen

In keeping with shortening the amount of time you can lock someone up for (4 years here max, vs 6 in NBA) I think we should have first 2 years guaranteed, 3rd year optional, then 4th year the player is a restricted free agent where anyone can bid on him but the original team has an option to match.

I guess the other problem would be if no one wants to bid something i guess it makes it harder to determine how much this player may actually be worth, but i guess that comes down to the market. Although, if, for instance, Blake Griffin by the end of his rookie scale should be worth a max contract, but no one can afford to pay him anything close to that, his current team could sign him to just a bit more than the MLE and get him for next to nothing and kill the league. That def is something to keep in mind, and really should have some effect on the player. Maybe find the players value range, and compare the price of other players around that value and say that the average should be their minimum or something like that.
