I seem to recall a suggestion they don't count against cap until they have an active NBA contract, right? For example, Wilson Chandler is hoopin in China. Will I retain him on roster, though not on salary, until he signs with the NBA? If so, what would be the time table for me to correct the books if need be?

The decision is as long as you don't waive him, he doesn't count against the cap, and you retain your bird rights on him when he does return. When he returns, he will be classified as a restricted free agent as long as you keep him on your roster. you will have 7 days to correct the books.

Thank you!

A point of confusion on my part ...

With the FA auction, do bids need to be placed within 12 hours of the auction starting, or within 12 hours of the previous bid (which means the auction can go on for as long as it takes until people stop bidding or a max contract is offered)?

I was under the impression it was within 12 hours of the auction start, but I'm seeing bids placed now well after that time.

12 hours of the previous bid. Otherwise it just be who can make the bid right at the last second.

Its 12 hours from the last bid on the player. you have to have the highest bid for the following 12 hours to win the player. If you have the leading bid for 12 hours(like I did on pierce) you win the player. And yes theoretically the auctions can go on forever if people keep trumping each others bids within 12 hours of each other.

Another n00b question:-

If, during the regular season, I see a FA available (cleared waivers), I have cap space available and I want to pick him up (with a contract, not a 7 day rental), do I just sign him to my team, or do I post his name to the forum and start an auction?
