Mandatory keepers?

I am the commissioner of a keeper league and in my experience, keeper selections for each year are mandatory. The keeper eligibility is pretty flexible and I have made it so that you can select up to 3, but keeping 2 is required. A friend is saying it should be optional (whether you want to keep any at all is up to you). What are your guys thoughts? In my other leagues (football/basketball), there's always been mandatory (I'm not the commish).

My leagues (baseball, basketball and hockey) all go with non-mandatory, but that decision was based on a vote by the managers. I voted for non-mandatory because it helps with competitive balance.

Like the idea of mandatory keepers with the option of selecting anywhere between 1-3 keepers.

Yeah, most of the guys in my league are pretty indifferent except for one or two that keep bothering me about it. Ideally in a keeper league, I'd like every team to participate. I have an owner that basically drops/adds players at a crazy amount and one of my requirements is that a player must remain on the roster around the league trade deadline. If he's dropped afterwards, he's no longer eligible to be kept.

I have found Keeper Leagues to be more fun as you're invested in x amount of players. Personally, I'd set a hard number of keepers and have everyone stick to it.
