Walled up?

Postby RedHopeful » Fri Sep 28, 2012 6:30 pm

Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that guard John Wall will miss approximately eight weeks after being diagnosed with the early stages of a stress injury to his left patella. No surgery will be necessary, and his rehab will begin immediately.

“My teammates and I are all excited to build on the improvement we made at the end of last season, and I know they will continue to make great progress while I get through this setback,” said Wall. “I will work extremely hard to make sure I get back as soon as possible so I can re-join them and help our team continue to improve."

Wall was examined yesterday in New York by orthopedic specialist Dr. David Altchek after experiencing discomfort in his left knee and underwent an MRI that revealed the early stages of a non-traumatic stress injury.

"We're all disappointed for John after how hard he worked this summer and how excited he was to begin training camp, but we feel fortunate that we caught the injury early and that he will be able to return with the vast majority of the season still in front of us," said Grunfeld. "In the meantime, we're confident that the versatility and depth of our team will help us move forward and continue the positive momentum that we've seen over the past several months."

Sad to hear. I think Wall is a good kid and has a good chance to do something really special and turn that franchise around. I hope that they don't rush him back and that he comes back 100% because that team really needs him for now and the future.

I wonder what the Wizards do now. They couldn't be thinking of starting the season off with A.J. Price as their starting PG. Maybe we'll see them sign a free agent stopgap solution like Pargo, Arroyo (heard he wants to return to the NBA), or someone. Doubt it'd happen, but maybe this would spur them to go after Barbosa to get a more solid backup PG after seeing Wall go down.

Has Crawford played any PG? I could see this happen I guess, with AJ backing up Crawford and Beal + their glut of wings SG/SF duties.

He played there sporadically, about as much as Shelvin Mack (Wall's other backup) did. Can't imagine they give Mack or AJ Price heavy minutes though. Makes more sense to put their best talent on the floor and have Crawford/Beal share ball-handling duties.

This one's a tough call. I don't necessarily think Mack or Price would get large minutes initially, but it would make sense to have at least one of them start the game. If not, one of them or Webster comes off the bench first? That sounds even less appealing. Definitely a situation to monitor in training camp. Bet whoever has the strongest camp(s) will be first in line.

That said, I always had a feeling Wall could be an injury prone type of player. O:-)

gotta think a trade is coming for some pg depth. then again maybe they just roll with the kids, may not be much to play for this year anyways.

Trading for Nene, Okafor and Ariza suggests otherwise. :-b Wall's only going to be out a month, and I think they'll be fine rolling with Crawford and Beal as starters and with the schmoes coming off the bench for that stretch. Trading for anyone of significant skill to cover a months absence probably isn't a good use of the team's assets.
